Portugal allocates 10 million euros to farmers affected by wildfires
The Portuguese government has released an additional 10 million euros to support agricultural holdings impacted by rural wildfires recorded between May 1 and October 15, 2026, across various regions of mainland Portugal. This marks the second allocation of this amount approved this year for such purposes.
Formalized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Sea, the funds aim to restore the productive capacity of farms that suffered significant losses, particularly in permanent crops, infrastructure, and agricultural equipment. Eligible expenses include the recovery of plantations, equipment, and interventions in olive groves and oak forests, such as regeneration pruning, grafting, phytosanitary treatments, and fertilization.
To qualify, holdings must have sustained damages exceeding 30% of their productive potential, with eligible investments reaching up to 400,000 euros. The support is provided as a non-reimbursable grant. The first 10,000 euros of eligible expenses will be 100% subsidized. For amounts exceeding this, the subsidy rate is 80% for farmers with agricultural insurance and 50% for others.
