Portugal announces 2,338 medical internship vacancies for 2026

Portugal has released the vacancy map for the 2026 Medical Internship, offering a total of 2,338 positions for specialized medical training across the country. General and Family Medicine (MGF) represents the largest share of these opportunities, with 675 vacancies nationwide.

Regional distributions show that the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region holds the highest number of vacancies (237), followed by the North (226) and the Center (121). In the Alentejo region, 89 vacancies are available across 17 specialties, with 41 dedicated to General and Family Medicine. Within the Viseu Dão Lafões Local Health Unit (ULS), 57 vacancies have been allocated, primarily in General and Family Medicine and Internal Medicine.

Among hospital-based specialties, Internal Medicine leads with 216 vacancies, followed by Pediatrics (110) and Anesthesiology (102). Other specialties such as Psychiatry, General Surgery, and Obstetrics/Gynecology also feature significant openings. Conversely, highly specialized fields like Pediatric Cardiology and Sports Medicine have only one vacancy each.
