Portugal: PM Montenegro announces pension bonus and IRS tax cuts

Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has announced several fiscal and social measures during a parliamentary debate on a motion of censure. The government will extend the extraordinary support for agricultural diesel, providing 10 cents per liter until December 31.

Additionally, Montenegro announced a pension supplement for approximately two million retirees receiving up to 1,611.13 euros, expected to be paid in December. He also proposed a reduction in IRS income tax for the first six income brackets, an initiative estimated to cost 400 million euros. This tax relief is intended to support the middle class and should be reflected in payroll withholdings starting in November.

The Socialist Party (PS) criticized these moves, labeling them a 'bonus in a month of convenience' rather than structural changes. Meanwhile, former central bank governor Mário Centeno suggested that such fiscal measures should ideally be integrated into the formal State Budget rather than announced ad hoc. The government also indicated that decisions regarding support for the transport sector, taxis, and firefighters will be made in the upcoming Council of Ministers.
