Portugal announces the New 7 Wonders of Portugal

The winners of the ‘7 Maravilhas de Portugal’ (New 7 Wonders of Portugal) were announced during a gala held at the Palácio da Vila de Sintra. The initiative, which began in March, involved over 600 heritage sites across the country, with final selections determined by public telephone voting.

The winning sites across various categories include:

• Castles: Castelo de Leiria • Great Works: Aqueduto da Usseira in Óbidos • History: Ruínas de São Cucufate in Vila de Frades • Religion: Sé de Lisboa • 20th Century: Mercados de Olhão • 21st Century: Tiago Cabaço Winery in Estremoz • Tourism: Jardim do Paço Episcopal in Castelo Branco

The Castelo de Leiria's victory is particularly symbolic following damage caused by Storm Kristin in January. Leiria Mayor Gonçalo Lopes noted that the distinction represents the territory's determination to recover and preserve its historical identity.
