Portugal 7 Wonders contest: Regional finalists announced
Overview
The “New 7 Wonders of Portugal” competition is advancing through regional stages following the selection of 147 finalists from 629 national nominations. The contest, which celebrates its 20th anniversary, focuses on architectural and historical monuments rather than natural landmarks. Regional updates include: • Santarém: The Cathedral of Santarém, Municipal Market, and Palace of Justice moved forward following an announcement at the National Palace of Queluz. • Alentejo and Ribatejo: Fourteen finalists, including the castles of Marvão and Monsaraz and the Alqueva Dam, were presented during a semi-final in Marvão. • Centre: The Palace Hotel da Curia and Museu do Azeite advanced as regional finalists. The Centum Cellas monument in Belmonte has entered a decisive phase in the “History – Historical Interest” category, with voting occurring between August 8 and August 15. A regional final is scheduled for August 15 at the Parque das Termas da Curia in Anadia to select seven sites for the national semi-finals. In the 20th Century category, the Palace Hotel da Curia is competing against the Museu Arte Nova de Aveiro. • Trás-os-Montes: Three sites have secured places in the national semi-finals: Picote – Moderno Escondido in Miranda do Douro (20th Century category), the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Graça in Mondim de Basto (Religion category), and Casa de Mateus in Vila Real (Tourism category). The “Moderno Escondido” complex, designed by architects João Archer, Nunes de Almeida, and Rogério Ramos, includes the Picote Dam. • Setúbal: Castelo de Palmela was selected as a leading finalist in the castle category. • Algarve: Seven sites were selected for the national semi-final: Castelo de Aljezur, Marina de Portimão, Ribat da Arrifana, Igreja da Misericórdia de Tavira, Mercados de Olhão, Portimão Arena, and Palácio de Estoi. • Madeira: A regional final was broadcast from Funchal, featuring 21 heritage candidates.
