Portugal appoints new commanders for Covilhã fire brigade and Alentejo civil protection
Armando Proença Maria was sworn in on 20 July as commander of the Covilhã Volunteer Fire Brigade. He highlighted a 34‑year career, recent rescue work in Venezuela, and pledged a leadership style based on unity, merit and close contact with both professional and volunteer members.
In Vila Viçosa, the new regional and sub‑regional command of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) was presented, led by regional commander Rui Conchinha. He outlined the structure’s readiness during the high‑risk fire season, warned of possible dry‑thunderstorm conditions, and emphasized scientific forecasting and prevention measures to improve territorial management.
