Portuguese firefighting and civil protection management

Overview

Following the appointment of new commanders for the Covilhã Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Alentejo civil protection regional command, Portuguese firefighting leadership has begun calling for systemic changes.

Leaders of the Portuguese Firefighters League have requested urgent structural reforms from the President of the Republic, seeking modernization of the sector. Proposed improvements include updating social statutes for volunteer and professional firefighters, enhancing forest fire combat methodologies, and increasing support for volunteers. This comes amid reports of recent casualties and injuries in the profession.

During the 150th anniversary of the Egitanienses Volunteer Firefighters Association in Guarda, António Nunes, president of the Liga dos Bombeiros Portugueses (LBP), urged President António José Seguro to accelerate public debate on these reforms. He highlighted that over 256 firefighters have died in the line of duty since 1980.

In response, State Secretary for Civil Protection Rui Rocha declared firefighters a "national priority" and announced that the government intends to finalize a legal framework for the careers of contracted humanitarian association staff by the end of the year. Additionally, 22 forest fire vehicles funded by Timor-Leste were delivered to the Central region. Other local leaders have emphasized the need for more predictable financing, stable public subsidies, and a strategic shift toward prevention over reactive combat.
