Portugal adjusts PRR funding to ensure project completion by 2027
The Portuguese government is implementing several measures to manage the transition and completion of projects funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). To ensure that ongoing works, such as health centers, schools, and nurseries, are not abandoned due to expiring deadlines, the government has proposed contract amendments allowing projects to be completed by December 31, 2027, without requiring the return of previously received funds. Additionally, a 200 million euro line of credit has been approved to guarantee the conclusion of unfinished PRR projects.
As of late September, the PRR has disbursed 15,178 million euros, representing 69% of the total contracted value. Major beneficiaries include companies, public entities, and municipalities. While the execution of the plan has been noted for its efficiency, some projects, such as the Pisão Dam, have faced delays due to judicial suspensions and have been reprogrammed for completion by 2030.
In parallel, efforts to mitigate forest fire risks are being bolstered through the distribution of specialized equipment. The Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests has delivered tractors and brush cutters to various municipalities in the Viseu district to enhance fuel management and rural fire prevention. Officials expressed confidence that these resources, combined with strategic planning, will improve forest protection for the upcoming summer.
