Portugal approves renewable energy acceleration zones

The Portuguese government has approved the Sectoral Program for Renewable Energy Implementation Acceleration Zones (PSZAER). This program identifies specific areas across the country suitable for the development of solar photovoltaic and wind energy projects.

In the Abrantes region, significant areas have been designated, including 7,031.87 hectares for solar energy and 3,543.23 hectares for wind power. Vila Nova da Barquinha also shows high potential, with 707.69 hectares (approximately 14.29% of the municipality) earmarked for solar projects. Other identified municipalities include Mação, Sardoal, and Almodôvar.

In the Alentejo region, Almodôvar stands out with 1,634.75 hectares identified for solar production, representing more than half of the solar area designated for the region. The program serves as a spatial planning and management tool rather than an immediate approval for construction. While the designation may facilitate simplified environmental and urbanistic procedures, any future projects must still undergo mandatory environmental assessments and licensing processes. Municipalities retain the ability to propose changes to these areas to avoid conflicts with agriculture, environmental protection, or existing infrastructure.
