Portugal renewable energy transition initiatives

Portugal has taken steps to accelerate its renewable energy transition through spatial planning and significant financial investment.

The government approved the Sectoral Program for Renewable Energy Implementation Acceleration Zones (PSZAER), which identifies specific regions for solar and wind power development. In the Abrantes region, thousands of hectares have been designated for these projects, alongside significant areas in Vila Nova da Barquinha, Mação, Sardoal, and Almodôvar. While the program aims to simplify environmental and urbanistic procedures, all future projects remain subject to mandatory environmental assessments and licensing.

Furthering these efforts, the Ministry of Environment and Energy announced the completion of targets under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). With investments exceeding 1.8 billion euros, the plan addressed 51 goals, including energy efficiency, water resilience, and the decarbonization of public transport. Specific funding was directed toward hydrogen, renewable gases, grid flexibility, and energy storage, while the ministry also continues to study offshore wind potential.
