Portugal braces for rising temperatures as heat wave looms

Portugal has entered the traditional hottest and driest period of the year, known locally as the "canícula," which runs from July 15 to August 15. Meteorological models forecast that while the first few days will remain relatively mild, a pattern of high pressure over the Atlantic could raise inland temperatures to between 35 °C and 40 °C from July 19‑24, especially in the interior regions of Transmontano, Alto Douro, Beira, Alentejo and the Guadiana valley.

Current forecasts already show daytime highs of 30‑35 °C across the interior, with coastal areas staying cooler due to Atlantic influence. Sea‑surface temperatures are unusually warm, reaching 21‑24 °C along the western and southern coasts, enhancing beach conditions but also increasing UV exposure. Although the heat wave criteria (duration, intensity and spatial extent) have not yet been met, forecasters warn that a new heat wave could develop as early as Saturday, depending on the persistence of the high‑pressure ridge and warm air advection from North Africa.
