Portugal completes cultural heritage goals under Recovery and Resilience Plan

Portugal has completed its objectives under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) for the culture sector, mobilizing a total of 330.4 million euros to protect heritage, modernize equipment, and facilitate digital transitions.

Within the cultural heritage component, 243.2 million euros in European Union funding was allocated to three main areas: the requalification and conservation of museums, monuments, and public palaces (including the construction of the National Sound Archive) with approximately 199.9 million euros; the requalification of national theaters with 41.6 million euros; and the ‘Saber Fazer’ program with 1.76 million euros.

These investments resulted in interventions across 83 museums, monuments, and palaces, exceeding the initial target of 81. The plan also extended to 90 cultural facilities across mainland Portugal and the autonomous regions of Azores and Madeira. Additionally, 87.2 million euros was dedicated to cultural networks and digital transition, modernizing over 500 cultural infrastructures.
