Portugal creates dedicated dental doctor career in National Health Service

Portugal's parliament approved a new career path for dental doctors within the National Health Service (SNS). The legislation establishes a distinct professional track with three categories—assistant, assessor, and senior assessor—integrating dentists into public oral health services and guaranteeing salary, career progression, and labour stability.

The reform addresses the precarious conditions previously faced by roughly 150 dentists who were often hired as contractors or placed in unrelated public service grades. Backed by the Socialist Party, the PAN, and the Order of Dental Doctors, the law aims to attract and retain qualified professionals, improve oral health provision, and recognize the specific technical and scientific nature of dental medicine.
