Portugal deploys 367 PSP officers to airports for summer border control

From 6 July 2026 the Public Security Police (PSP) placed 367 newly trained officers from its National Unit for Foreigners and Borders (UNEF) at Portugal’s main airports – Lisbon (170), Porto (78), Faro (69), Funchal (29) and the Azores (21). The officers, who completed a theoretical course on aerial border control, began a two‑week operational internship but started duties immediately to assist senior staff.

The deployment responds to longer passenger queues that have arisen since the European Schengen border‑control system became fully operational in April 2026. The government increased human resources at Lisbon’s airport in late May and expanded the measure nationwide to cope with the expected summer surge in international travelers.
