Portugal's Minister of Education, Fernando Alexandre, addressed significant challenges at the start of the school year during a parliamentary debate requested by the PCP. The Minister reported that approximately 6,000 teachers have taken medical leave since the school year began, leaving roughly 2,000 teaching hours unfilled, with a high concentration of vacancies in the Lisbon and Setúbal regions.

Regarding student placement, the Minister noted that 52 students were still awaiting school vacancies at the beginning of the week. He attributed these delays largely to late enrollments, a recurring issue in recent years, particularly involving foreign students. While acknowledging that some classes have exceeded the 30-student limit—with 124 classes exceeding this number—he defended the practice as being within regulatory bounds to ensure all children receive placement.

The debate saw sharp political friction. The PCP accused the government of degrading public education to facilitate privatization, while the PS criticized the administration for failing to address the lack of school vacancies. Minister Alexandre countered by stating that the current administration is working daily to resolve these issues and argued that similar placement challenges occurred under previous Socialist governments.
