During a parliamentary debate in late September, Education Minister Fernando Alexandre addressed significant staffing and placement hurdles. He reported that approximately 6,000 teachers have taken medical leave since the school year began, resulting in roughly 2,000 unfilled teaching hours, with vacancies concentrated in the Lisbon and Setúbal regions. Regarding student placement, the Minister noted that 52 students were awaiting vacancies, attributing delays to late enrollments, particularly among foreign students.

Minister Alexandre also defended the fact that 124 classes have exceeded the 30-student limit, stating the practice remains within regulatory bounds to ensure all children receive placement. The situation has sparked political friction; the PCP accused the government of degrading public education to facilitate privatization, while the PS criticized the administration for failing to address the lack of vacancies. The Minister maintained that the administration is working daily to resolve these issues.
