Portugal Education Minister Fernando Alexandre Addresses National Exam Crisis
Education Minister Fernando Alexandre announced that 70% of the second‑phase national secondary exams have been classified and that the process is proceeding "without problems to record". The minister said the first phase suffered digitalisation failures that caused missing pages, anomalous grades and the word "suspenso" on school boards, especially in Santarém schools.
The Provedoria de Justiça confirmed that all complaints about the exam classification have been archived and that the Ministry of Education has adopted measures to correct the digitalisation issues. The minister will appear before the Permanent Commission of the Portuguese Parliament on Monday to explain the situation, a request backed by the Socialist Party and President António José Seguro, who warned that first‑phase grades must be delivered in time for university applications.
Student and teacher protests have grown, with calls for Alexandre’s resignation, while the government maintains that no student will be disadvantaged and that the university admission calendar will be preserved.
