Portugal establishes July 31 as National Day of Vine and Wine

The Portuguese government has officially created a National Day of Vine and Wine to be celebrated each year on July 31. The decree, signed by Agriculture and Sea Minister José Manuel Fernandes, highlights wine as a pillar of the Portuguese table with social, economic, cultural, religious, environmental and landscape dimensions.

The Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho (IVV) will coordinate events and launched a new wine portal along with the 2025 wine and spirits yearbook. In 2025 the country recorded 169,663 ha of vineyards and produced 595.6 million liters of wine. The sector is described as a driver of the national economy, supporting rural communities and boosting wine tourism, with exports exceeding 350 million liters and a target of €1 billion in export revenue by 2026.
