Portugal expands electric vehicle charging infrastructure

Portugal is seeing significant developments in electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure through both private and public sector initiatives.

Leroy Merlin and Helexia have launched a social-impact EV charging network across 15 stores in Portugal. The network features over 90 charging points and has already served more than 10,000 unique users. A portion of the revenue generated from these charging sessions is donated to the ReCria program, a corporate volunteering initiative that funds the rehabilitation of homes for vulnerable individuals and social institutions.

In the public transport sector, Remo (powered by Mota-Engil) and Grupo Valpi have inaugurated a new electric mobility infrastructure at the Penafiel Transport Center. Funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), the project includes 20 high-power charging points with a total capacity of 2,000 kW. This infrastructure supports a fleet of 20 fully electric HIGER buses distributed between Valpi Bus and Expressdiagram, utilizing an intelligent energy management system to optimize operations.
