Iberian electric vehicle infrastructure expansion

Overview

While Iberian nations continue expanding electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructures, Spain faces challenges with deployment rates and network reliability. As of September 1, 2026, AEDIVE reported 52,746 operational points in Spain, a 5.49% increase from the end of 2025. This figure reflects a recent downward adjustment from July’s recorded 57,000 points, which AEDIVE attributed to the removal of inactive or outdated equipment.

Recent data indicates a significant slowdown in Spanish deployment. Anfac reported that while 5,003 points were installed between January and September 2026, this volume is only 37.4% of the amount recorded during the same period in 2025. Furthermore, approximately 17,965 points, or 23.6% of the total network, are currently non-operational due to malfunctions, poor maintenance, or connection delays. Spain’s infrastructure index of 15.9 remains roughly half the European Union average of 31.5.

Despite these hurdles, adoption and high-power infrastructure are growing. In the Valencian Community, 100% electric vehicle sales rose by 22.8% in 2026, partly driven by rising fuel prices. Strategic high-power projects continue, such as the Iberdrola bp pulse hub in San Cibrao das Viñas, which offers 600 kW output for heavy transport. On the A-3 highway, the Moya Hub Honrubia is now operational at kilometer 168, providing 2,320 kW of capacity. Additionally, the government has authorized a tender for a new ultra-fast station near Saelices, Cuenca, as part of a 611.9 million euro state concession plan to decarbonize the national highway network.
