Portugal extends heat alert to Évora district amid high temperatures

The Portuguese government has extended the nationwide heat‑wave alert until 23:59 GMT on 9 July, keeping the alert active in the Évora district and maintaining it in ten other districts – Vila Real, Bragança, Guarda, Viseu, Castelo Branco, Beja, Santarém, Portalegre, Faro and Évora. Ministers responsible for defence, infrastructure, health, labour, solidarity, environment, culture and agriculture approved the extension to ensure rapid response to any fire risk, protect people and property, and keep emergency services mobilised.

A concurrent yellow weather warning advises residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor exposure during peak heat hours, limit alcohol and sugary drinks, and take special care of vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and outdoor workers. The alert also includes guidance for motorists to travel during cooler periods and to avoid leaving passengers, especially animals, in vehicles.

In Vila Viçosa, the municipality launched a cultural‑heritage innovation partnership with the StoryPath app, offering geolocated audio narratives and 3‑D visualisations of 25 local sites in nine languages as part of a pilot running from June to September.
