Portugal faces extreme heat and thunderstorm alerts
Portugal is facing severe weather conditions characterized by extreme heat and potential thunderstorms. The Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) has issued orange alerts for nine northern districts, including Fafe, due to temperatures approaching 40°C. Some regions, such as Santarém, may see maximum temperatures reaching 42°C.
In addition to the heat, several districts are under yellow alerts for thunderstorms. These storms may bring heavy rain, hail, and wind gusts exceeding 80 km/h, particularly in mountainous and southern regions. The combination of high temperatures and sudden storms creates a risk of flash flooding in urban areas and valleys.
The Autoridade Nacional de Emergência e Proteção Civil (ANEPC) has warned of an increased risk of rural wildfires, noting that low humidity levels (below 30%) and high temperatures create dangerous conditions for fire spread. Consequently, certain activities such as burning agricultural waste or using fire for cooking in rural areas are prohibited.
Due to the extreme heat, the Médio Tejo region has declared a red public health alert. Health authorities are urging vulnerable populations, including the elderly and children, to stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure.
