Spain and Portugal brace for record-breaking summer heat wave

Meteorological agencies in Spain and Portugal warn of an unprecedented heat wave this week. The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) predicts temperatures above 40 °C across the northeast, centre and southern peninsula and tropical night‑time lows over 20 °C, with the possibility of reaching 42 °C in extreme spots. Portugal’s Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasts maximums of 43‑45 °C in interior valleys such as the Douro and Tejo, and night‑time highs above 20 °C, potentially creating one of the most intense heat episodes of the year.

Yellow heat alerts have been activated in ten Spanish autonomous regions – including Andalusia, Catalonia, the Basque Country and Castilla‑La León – and in multiple Portuguese districts. The extreme temperatures are also heightening wildfire risk, with Portugal declaring maximum fire‑danger levels in fifteen municipalities across six districts and Spain issuing similar warnings in vulnerable rural areas. Authorities advise limiting outdoor activity, staying hydrated and protecting vulnerable groups.

The heat is expected to intensify over the weekend, with thunderstorms and occasional hail forecast for northern and western zones, while the interior remains dry and extremely hot. The episode could mark the first official summer heat wave of 2026 for the Iberian Peninsula.
