Portugal and Brazil face extreme weather shifts

Portugal and Brazil are experiencing significant weather shifts, characterized by extreme heat in some regions and incoming cold fronts in others.

In Portugal, the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) has issued yellow alerts for eleven districts due to extreme heat. Temperatures in the interior, particularly in the Vale do Tejo, Beira Baixa, and Alentejo, are expected to reach between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius. The ULS Médio Tejo has activated a public health orange alert, warning vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children about the risks of dehydration and heat exhaustion. There is also an increased risk of rural fires in several districts.

In Brazil, weather patterns are equally varied. Mato Grosso do Sul is seeing a rapid rise in temperatures, with highs reaching up to 38 degrees Celsius and low humidity levels. Conversely, a cold front is moving through the country, bringing heavy rains to the Rio Grande do Sul, parts of the North, and the Northeast. In the South, the arrival of a polar air mass is expected to bring significant temperature drops and potential frost or snow in high-altitude areas. In the Center-West, while some areas face heat, others may see rains that could benefit upcoming agricultural planting.
