Portugal fire danger peaks as heat wave pushes temperatures above 38°C
The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has placed more than 40 municipalities in the North, Centre and Algarve at maximum fire‑danger level, with about 90 municipalities at very high risk. The assessment is based on recent temperature, humidity, wind speed and precipitation data.
Temperatures are expected to climb to 38 °C in Castelo Branco, 36 °C in Faro, 31 °C in Lisbon and 25 °C in Porto, creating conditions that could trigger widespread wildfires. A yellow weather warning has been issued for the Faro district and the Madeira archipelago.
The heat wave is forecast to persist throughout the week, with inland areas potentially reaching or exceeding 40 °C, while coastal regions remain moderated by Atlantic breezes.
