Portugal faces intense summer heat, fire danger and record wine harvest
The Alentejo wine region expects a 20% increase in the 2026 harvest, projecting 108 million litres of wine compared with 87 million litres in 2025. The forecast, issued by the Regional Wine Commission of Alentejo (CVRA) with data from the University of Porto, attributes the boost to well‑distributed rainfall, a cold winter and a lack of adverse weather.
Meteorological services predict August 2026 will be 3‑7 °C above normal across mainland Portugal. Interior areas are expected to reach 35‑39 °C, while coastal zones will be cooler at 20‑26 °C. A maritime air influx will lower temperatures along the coast and in the north, but the interior will remain unusually hot.
The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) reports that dozens of municipalities in eight districts – Bragança, Vila Real, Guarda, Portalegre, Viseu, Castelo Branco, Coimbra and Santarém – are in maximum fire‑danger level. Temperatures in the most affected spots may peak at 38 °C in Bragança and 37 °C in Beja, with lower yet still high values in Faro, Lisbon and Porto. The combination of heat, fire risk and a strong harvest underscores the impact of the current summer weather on Portugal’s agriculture and public safety.
