Portugal weather: Heat warnings issued for 16 districts and high fire risk

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued yellow weather warnings for 16 districts in mainland Portugal due to persistent high temperatures. The heatwave, driven by an anticyclone located north of the Azores extending toward the Bay of Biscay, is expected to bring temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius across much of the territory, with some areas in the Alentejo and Tagus Valley potentially reaching 38 degrees Celsius.

Warnings for various districts vary in duration, with some expiring as early as Monday, while others, such as Bragança, Guarda, and Vila Real, remain under alert until Thursday.

Concurrently, more than 60 municipalities across 10 districts, including Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria, Santarém, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, and Faro, are facing maximum rural fire risk. IPMA indicates that fire danger may remain very high in certain regions until at least the end of next week.
