Portugal's Summer Cultural Festivals Showcase Music, Folklore, Community
Across Portugal, a slate of summer cultural festivals is underway. The 12th Festival Internacional de Música de Marvão (FIMM) opened on 24 July, featuring more than 320 musicians and performances in historic venues such as the Castle of Marvão, with programmes centered on Robert Schumann and a tribute to Benjamin Britten.
The Raízes Folk Fest – Festival de Folclore do Mundo – will travel through seven interior municipalities from 9 to 16 August, presenting groups from Brazil, Colombia, Kenya, Indonesia, Georgia, Hungary and Portugal in free evening concerts.
Portimão’s Festival da Sardinha returns from 4 to 9 August, offering grilled sardines, live cooking demos and concerts by Matias Damásio, Cuca Roseta and Xutos & Pontapés.
Fafe celebrates the Festa do Emigrante from 1 to 9 August with concerts, theatrical shows and a programme designed to reunite expatriates with their hometown.
Other events include the MUSICAM(Ó)S music festival in Porto de Mós (21–30 August), a concert series at the Convento dos Remédios in Évora, the “Fados ao Luar” fado night in Pechão, folk festivals in Redondo, Ul and other villages, and numerous local performances showcasing traditional music, dance and gastronomy.
