Portugal issues heat, pollen and UV alerts across mainland districts

The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) placed seven continental districts – Évora, Guarda, Beja, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Vila Real and Bragança – under a yellow heat warning from Monday morning until Wednesday early morning because maximum temperatures are expected to remain unusually high.

The Portuguese Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (SPAIC) warned that most of continental Portugal will face moderate to elevated pollen concentrations through early July, especially from olive, chestnut, grass and various herb species. Levels are lower in the Algarve and the autonomous islands.

Meteorological forecasts also predict very high ultraviolet radiation across much of the country during the same period, with UV‑index values of 9‑10 (scale 0‑15) expected in the south, centre and parts of the north. Health authorities advise staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activity during peak heat, keeping windows closed on high‑pollen days, and using sunscreen, protective clothing and UV‑blocking eyewear when exposure is unavoidable.
