Portugal heatwave triggers extreme temperatures, UV and fire danger warnings

Portugal is experiencing a heatwave with temperatures soaring to 38 °C in Braga and up to 40 °C in parts of the Alentejo, Ribatejo and Douro Valley. The Institute Portuguese of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued yellow warnings for heat across the mainland and elevated UV‑radiation alerts, classifying risk as very high for the whole continental territory and the islands until at least Monday.

More than 160 municipalities in 17 districts are placed under maximum rural‑fire danger, while additional districts face very high to high fire risk. Authorities advise avoiding sun exposure, using protective gear and limiting outdoor activities. Tomorrow, mountainous areas of Braga and Viana do Castelo may see thunderstorms and hail, adding to the volatile weather pattern driven by an Anticyclone near the Azores and a depression from North Africa.

The extreme conditions also affect public events, with local festivals in the Alentejo region proceeding under weather alerts and possible showers later in the day.
