Portugal heritage sites reach ‘7 Maravilhas’ national final
The national final of the ‘7 Maravilhas de Portugal’ competition is scheduled for Saturday, September 12. Several Portuguese heritage sites have secured positions in the final stages of the contest.
In the Religion category, the Santarém Cathedral has advanced to the national final following its success in the semifinals held in Sintra. The municipality of Santarém has highlighted the cathedral as a significant historical, architectural, and spiritual monument for the region.
In the 20th Century category, the ‘Moderno Escondido’ architectural complex in Picote, located in the municipality of Miranda do Douro, has also reached the final. This site, associated with the Picote Dam, is recognized for its modernist architecture designed by João Archer, Nunes de Almeida, and Rogério Ramos. Built during the 1950s as part of national hydroelectric development, the complex is noted for its integration of architecture, engineering, and landscape.
