Portugal implements regional strategies to address population aging

Portugal is addressing the challenges of an aging population through regional social policies and strategic planning. In the Alentejo region, Nuno Alas, director of the Évora District Center of the Social Security Institute, has warned of a “structural imbalance” caused by demographic aging. He emphasized the need for improved social services and policies that allow elderly citizens to remain in their homes longer, noting that residential structures are facing increasing demand.

In Madeira, the Regional Government is preparing the Regional Plan for Active and Healthy Aging 2027-2031 (PREAS 2027-2031). Following the approval of the Elderly Person Statute, this new plan consists of 58 measures organized into five strategic axes. The plan aims to improve autonomy, security, and dignity for the elderly by focusing on caregiver support, enabling safe aging at home, and recognizing the societal contributions of older citizens. The initiative involves over 30 partner institutions and seeks funding through community funds to meet growing needs.
