Portugal Issues Yellow Alerts for Multiple Districts Amid Storm Risks

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) placed twelve districts of mainland Portugal under a yellow warning because of forecasted heavy rain, thunderstorms and possible hail. The warned districts include Porto, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro, Braga, Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real, Castelo Branco, Santarém, Coimbra and Portalegre. A separate advisory listed five districts – Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real and Castelo Branco – under the same alert for the following two days. The yellow level is the lowest of three tiers and is issued when weather conditions pose a risk to activities such as agriculture and transport.

In parallel, the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) began a three‑day parliamentary mission in the districts of Leiria and Coimbra to examine the impact of the early‑year storms and the alleged delays in government assistance. Party leader Paula Santos highlighted extensive damage to families and businesses, urged faster relief measures and warned about heightened fire risk from abundant forested areas. The delegation met with local officials, firefighters and farmers while the Labour Package was debated in parliament.

Both the meteorological alerts and the political visits underscore ongoing concerns over severe weather, potential wildfires and the adequacy of state response across affected regions of Portugal.
