Portugal launches July road safety campaign for motorcycles and mopeds

Portugal’s National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), together with the National Republican Guard (GNR) and the Public Security Police (PSP), will run a road‑safety campaign from 7 to 13 July 2026. It is the seventh of eleven actions in the 2026 National Inspection Plan and focuses on two‑wheel motorised vehicles, a user group with high exposure to road‑traffic risk.

The campaign, titled “Two Wheels – Hold on to Life”, combines public awareness activities by ANSR with traffic‑stop operations by GNR and PSP. It targets risky behaviours such as speeding, dangerous overtaking, lane‑weaving, abrupt maneuvers, alcohol or drug use, failure to wear approved helmets and other protective gear, and distracted riding. Authorities highlight that between 2023 and 2025 there were 34,179 accidents involving motorcycles or mopeds, resulting in 440 deaths, 3,041 serious injuries and 34,501 minor injuries. Almost half of the serious crashes occurred on urban streets and national roads, prompting intensified enforcement in those locations.
