Portugal meets all cultural targets under Recovery and Resilience Plan

Portugal has met all targets established under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) for the culture sector, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport. A total of 330.4 million euros was mobilized to protect cultural heritage, modernize equipment, and facilitate digital transitions.

Under the Cultural Heritage component, 243.2 million euros in European Union funding was allocated toward the conservation of museums, monuments, and public palaces, the construction of the National Sound Archive, and the requalification of national theaters. The government reported that interventions were completed in 83 museums and monuments, exceeding the initial goal of 81. Including ongoing works, the plan covers 90 cultural sites across the country, including the Azores and Madeira.

The Cultural Networks and Digital Transition component utilized 87.2 million euros to modernize over 500 cultural infrastructures, surpassing the original target of 444. This included more than 300 municipal libraries and reading hubs, as well as over 170 cinemas and contemporary art centers. Additionally, the digitalization of cultural collections exceeded expectations, with approximately 24 million images digitized from the National Library of Portugal and the Évora Public Library.
