Portugal minimum wage debate intensifies between unions and business leaders

Debate regarding the national minimum wage in Portugal has intensified following proposals from major labor unions and criticisms from business leaders.

Representatives from the UGT have proposed increasing the minimum wage to 1,000 euros for 2027, arguing that current targets are insufficient to combat inflation and rising costs in housing and fuel. Meanwhile, the CGTP has called for a “wage shock,” advocating for a 15% general increase for all workers and a minimum wage of 1,100 euros by January 2027 to ensure a fairer distribution of wealth.

In contrast, Gustavo Paulo Duarte, president of the Confederação do Comércio Português, has criticized minimum wage decrees. He argued that mandatory increases compress the margins available for companies to distribute raises to other employees and suggested that such policies can negatively impact average salaries.
