On 27 July 2026 a forest fire ignited in the Mamodeiro area of the Aveiro municipality, suspected to be deliberately set. Portuguese civil protection deployed more than 200 operacionais, about 65 ground vehicles and four aerial units to combat the blaze, which threatened the industrial zone of Oiã but caused no reported damage to houses or facilities. The fire forced the closure of the A1 highway in both directions between the Mealhada and Albergaria‑a‑Velha junctions and also halted rail traffic on the North line between Oliveira do Bairro and Oiã. By evening the highway was reopened after the fire entered a resolution phase.

The incident was part of a wider wave of wildfires across Portugal that saw over 1 000 firefighters and about 20 aircraft engaged in the north and central regions, where temperatures were forecast to reach up to 40 °C and the Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) classified fire risk as very high or maximum for many municipalities. Separate fires burned in the Guarda district (around 320 operacionais and 11 aerial assets) and in Soure (about 200 operacionais and 12 aerial assets), while additional hotspots were reported in Deilão, Paço dos Negros and other localities.
