The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) placed thirteen interior municipalities and the Faro district in maximum wildfire risk on 26 July 2026, with around a hundred more in very high risk as temperatures rose toward 40 °C in parts of the country.

In the municipality of Soure, central Portugal, about 200 firefighters, 46 ground vehicles and 12 aerial aircraft were deployed to fight a forest fire that broke out on the afternoon of 26 July. Authorities said no houses were in immediate danger and the blaze remained confined to forested terrain.

During fire‑monitoring operations, a technical failure caused an OGASSA 42N/VN surveillance drone to crash into an olive grove near Alcoentre. The drone is one of twelve owned by the Air Force for wildfire observation, each costing roughly €375 000 under a €4.5 million contract awarded in 2020.

Portugal also dispatched a joint operational team of 128 personnel, along with 500 combat rations, to assist Spain in fighting severe fires in the province of Ávila under a bilateral mutual‑aid protocol.
