Portugal police detain 66 drunk drivers and six drug suspects in separate enforcement sweeps

The Portuguese National Republican Guard (GNR) carried out a special road‑traffic operation on early‑morning highways around Lisbon, checking 2,989 drivers. Of those, 264 had a blood‑alcohol level above the legal limit and 66 were arrested for driving with a concentration of ≥ 1.2 g/L, the criminal threshold for intoxicated driving. The checks covered the Vasco da Gama Bridge, the A1, A2, A5 and A8 motorways and the IC20, involving 164 officers and resulting in 236 traffic citations.

In a separate operation in Moimenta da Beira, GNR officers detained three adults and a woman, ages 26‑49, after discovering 130 doses of psilocybin mushrooms, 48 doses of hashish and two doses of liamba intended for sale at a local music festival. Three additional men, ages 32‑65, were cited for personal drug use, bringing the total number of people detained to six. The case was forwarded to the local court for prosecution.
