Portugal political debate focuses on pension and tax relief
Portuguese political debates have centered on economic relief measures proposed by different parties. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro announced an extraordinary pension supplement and an IRS income tax reduction for up to the sixth bracket, with each measure estimated to cost 400 million euros, totaling 800 million euros.
In contrast, opposition proposals have included zero VAT on food baskets, which critics argue disproportionately benefits high consumers, as well as reductions in fuel VAT and the abolition of tolls on the 25 de Abril and Vasco da Gama bridges.
