Portugal postpones national exam results after digital grading failures

For the first time, more than 300,000 secondary‑school exams in Portugal were digitised and sent to teachers for grading. Technical problems with the online grading platform – including missing answer sheets, illegible scans and system outages – left many teachers without access to the papers and forced the Ministry of Education to suspend the platform briefly.

The ministry announced that the publication of the first‑phase results will move from 14 July to 17 July and that the second phase of the national exams will run from 20 July to 24 July, later adjusted to start on 21 July. Minister Fernando Alexandre cited “software difficulties” as the cause of the calendar change.

Opposition parties and trade unions have demanded accountability. The PCP’s Paulo Raimundo warned that students must not be harmed, the IL asked the minister about possible further postponements, the BE called for the exemption of fees for exam re‑assessment, and Chega proposed an urgent parliamentary debate on the “brutal failures”. Parents have launched a petition to annul the exams, citing emotional distress and financial losses from altered travel plans. The platform remained under maintenance for several hours, affecting thousands of teachers.

The controversy has sparked a broader discussion on the digitalisation of Portugal’s educational assessment system and its impact on students, families and educators.
