Portugal’s Interior Minister Luís Neves faces investigation over missing asset declarations and seized trailer case

Portugal’s Minister of the Interior, Luís Neves, former director of the Polícia Judiciária (PJ), is subject to multiple investigations. Journalists have found that he did not submit the legally required asset, income and interest declarations to the Constitutional Court for the period he led the PJ (2018‑2024). The first declarations were only filed after his return to the role in 2024.

A separate probe concerns a trailer (the “atrelado”) seized in a drug‑trafficking operation that later turned up at the construction firm Construbarcelos, which carried out works on Neves’s private property in Odemira. The Public Prosecutor’s Office (DIAP) now leads the investigation, while the PJ says it has not been removed from the case.

Opposition parties, including Chega and the Liberal Initiative, have demanded urgent parliamentary explanations and are pushing for a commission of inquiry into Neves’s tenure at the PJ and the Odemira works. The municipal council of Odemira has also requested all documentation on the construction permits. Neves has said he will explain the matters point‑by‑point at a later date, emphasizing his focus on forest‑fire response.
