Portugal housing protests lead to clashes and 55 arrests

Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in Lisbon and Porto to demonstrate against a worsening housing crisis and soaring property costs. The demonstrations follow a police operation in the early hours of Tuesday, which targeted activist tent camps in central squares.

Authorities reported that 228 camping structures were removed during the coordinated raids. In Lisbon, the operation led to 55 arrests and at least two reported injuries as protesters formed human chains to resist the clearing of Rossio Square. In Porto, demonstrators reportedly dismantled their own tents in Dom João I Square following police warnings.

Activists are demanding the withdrawal of a government bill that eases eviction procedures and removes rent caps on new leases. They are also calling for increased public housing supply and a halt to real estate fund acquisitions. In response to the police action, many protesters in Lisbon voted to return to the square, opting to sleep outdoors to maintain the movement's presence.

Portuguese President António José Seguro has called for a broad political agreement to implement long-term measures to address the crisis. Meanwhile, the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP) expressed readiness to assist the state in increasing the public housing stock through various funding mechanisms.
