Portugal protests erupt over housing crisis and rising living costs

Thousands of citizens in Portugal participated in widespread protests across five cities, including Lisbon, Porto, Aveiro, and Braga, to denounce the rising cost of living and the housing crisis. The demonstrations were organized by the platform 'Não dá mais para viver assim', a coalition of approximately 40 civil society organizations. Protesters highlighted that rent costs are consuming significant portions of average salaries, making independent living increasingly difficult for younger generations.

In Porto, approximately 1,500 people gathered, with some participants setting up a protest camp in Praça D. João I. Police recently moved to dismantle these tents, leading to moments of tension between authorities and demonstrators.

The unrest follows recent legislative developments in the Portuguese Parliament. A new rental law was approved in its first reading that could allow rent increases without a fixed legal limit, replacing the previous 2% cap. Additionally, the bill proposes accelerating eviction processes for rent arrears from three months to two months. Demonstrators have called for rent controls, taxation of high corporate profits in the banking and energy sectors, and increased investment in public housing to address the shortage.
