Europe faces widespread cost-of-living protests and unrest
A wave of mass demonstrations and civil unrest has spread across several European nations, driven by rising living costs, housing crises, and dissatisfaction with public services and education.
In France, significant unrest occurred with approximately 550,000 participants across dozens of cities. The protests resulted in over 1,800 to 2,000 arrests and left more than 500 security personnel injured. Violence included looting, arson, and the destruction of public buildings, notably the 143-year-old Limoges town hall. One death was reported in Paris following a cardiac arrest during the demonstrations.
Italy experienced violent clashes in cities such as Milan, Turin, and Bologna. In Milan, protesters targeted storefronts and supermarkets, leading to over 270 temporary arrests, many of whom were minors. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni convened an emergency meeting to discuss security measures, including potential curfews.
In Portugal, thousands of people held protests in Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra, specifically focusing on housing rights and wage increases. In Lisbon, demonstrators established camps in public squares, leading to tensions with police regarding the legality of overnight occupations. Similar demonstrations have also been reported in Belgium and Albania.
