Portugal provides emergency aid to municipalities and farmers after storm Kristin

The Portuguese government has opened the Municipal Emergency Fund (FEM) for parishes damaged by storm Kristin. Applications, due by 30 November, can receive up to 60% of eligible costs for repairing or rebuilding public infrastructure such as town halls, workshops, playgrounds and sports equipment. Applicants must submit detailed documentation proving the damage was caused by the storm, including cost estimates, maps and photographs. Francisco Branco de Brito, president of the National Association of Parishes (ANAFRE), said the fund "changes everything" for councils with limited budgets.

In parallel, the government is preparing a new compensation scheme for farmers hit by the same storm. The plan will target losses in greenhouses, horticulture and pig farming, building on a previous €50 million aid package for farms that suffered more than 30% loss of productive potential under the EU CAP framework. Authorities are gathering insurance data to calibrate the new measures and expect to announce the details later this summer.
