Portugal storm Kristin response

In early July, local fire brigades in Leiria were awaiting reimbursement for school‑repair costs incurred after storm Kristin, while municipalities began funding those repairs themselves. By early August, the Portuguese government had formalised its response, opening the Municipal Emergency Fund (FEM) for parishes damaged by the storm. Applications, due by 30 November, can cover up to 60 % of eligible costs for public infrastructure such as town halls, workshops, playgrounds and sports equipment, provided detailed damage evidence is submitted. Simultaneously, authorities announced a forthcoming compensation scheme for farmers affected by the storm, extending earlier €50 million aid for severe agricultural losses and targeting greenhouse, horticulture and pig‑farming sectors.

The progression shows a shift from ad‑hoc local reimbursement efforts to a coordinated national aid programme covering both municipal infrastructure and agricultural losses.
