Portugal records marine heatwaves off Faro as summer temperatures soar

The Portuguese Navy’s Hydrographic Institute reported two marine heatwaves off the coast of Faro between 15 June and 9 July. The coastal buoy measured a daily average sea‑surface temperature of about 25 °C, with the first event classified as “moderate” (peak 23.3 °C) and the second as “strong” (peak 24.8 °C). A maximum temperature of 26.1 °C was recorded, highlighting the intensity of the warming.

Earlier in 2024, Portugal experienced six heatwaves, totalling 59 heat‑wave days by early July, prompting retailers to respond. Lidl introduced a €14.99 tower fan, the Mini Ventilador Torre TRONIC, available from 17 to 23 July, aimed at consumers seeking low‑cost cooling as temperatures remain high.
