Portugal regulator says media breached rigor on Spinumviva reports
The Entidade Reguladora para a Comunicação Social (ERC) ruled that the newspaper Correio da Manhã, the television channel CMTV and the outlet News Now violated duties of informative rigor in their coverage of Spinumviva, the family company of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro. The dispute stems from reports on 1 May that the Central Investigation and Prosecution Department (DCIAP) had, after closing a preventive investigation into Spinumviva, allegedly passed client information to the Tax Authority in a formal fiscal complaint. On the same day, the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) issued a note denying any such complaint or transmission. Montenegro lodged a complaint with the ERC alleging breaches of rigor, neutrality, anti‑sensationalism and the right to correction. The ERC rejected the immediate right to correction, noting it is subject to a specific legal procedure, but affirmed the issue’s public‑interest relevance due to alleged fiscal irregularities involving the prime minister. It also highlighted weaknesses in the outlets’ observance of rigor, particularly after the PGR’s denial, and noted that the outlets provided no additional evidence to contradict the official statement.
