Portugal records 680 excess deaths during severe July heatwave and drought
Portugal experienced a severe period of meteorological drought and heat in July 2026. According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), July was the driest month of the century for continental Portugal, with rainfall levels falling below 8% of the seasonal norm.
The extreme weather conditions coincided with three distinct periods of excess mortality recorded by the National Institute of Health Ricardo Jorge (INSA) and the Directorate-General for Health (DGS). A total of 680 excess deaths were reported during the summer, with the most significant spike occurring between July 2 and July 8, which saw 555 deaths, a 29% increase above expected levels. Authorities noted that heat waves likely acted as a trigger or aggravating factor for these deaths, particularly among individuals aged 75 and older.
Temperature extremes were also notable, with a maximum of 44.3°C recorded in Mora on July 3. While most river basins maintained water availability above normal levels, the Lima and Mondego basins recorded lower volumes compared to their typical averages.
