Portugal rolls out 12 speed radars and new Grande Rota hiking bridges

The Portuguese government announced the installation of 12 new average‑speed radars as part of a broader road‑safety campaign that also includes the reactivation of the GNR traffic brigade and a forthcoming revision of the Road Code. The measures aim to cut road fatalities by 50% by 2030, with the radars expected to be operational by September.

Separately, the Grande Rota long‑distance walking trail will receive two new suspension bridges—one at Pedra Má and another at Caldeirão—along with 710 waymarkers, informational panels and interpretive tables. The construction contract, published in the official gazette, is slated for award by late July with a 180‑day execution period, enhancing the trail’s natural and cultural attractions across several municipalities.

Both initiatives reflect Portugal’s effort to improve public infrastructure, promote safety and boost sustainable tourism.
